About HandiPark

HandiPark is a mobile application designed to help people with mobility impairments find accessible parking spots (HC parking) across multiple European countries. The app retrieves data from OpenStreetMap and other sources, ensuring users always have up-to-date information about the location and availability of accessible parking spaces.

Compliance Status

HandiPark is developed with 'accessibility by design' as a fundamental principle. We strive to conform to WCAG 2.1 at Level AA. The app is continuously tested and improved to meet accessibility requirements under Norwegian regulations on universal design of ICT solutions (forskrift om universell utforming av IKT-løsninger).

Accessibility Features

  • Scalable Text: Full support for Dynamic Type (iOS) and system font scaling (Android), allowing users to significantly increase text size without loss of information or functionality.
  • High Contrast: The interface is optimized with color combinations that ensure good readability for users with low vision. A dedicated high contrast mode is available in the app settings.
  • Screen Reader Support: Full compatibility with VoiceOver (iOS) and TalkBack (Android) for complete navigation of the app using assistive technology.
  • Smart Info: Built-in translation of specific parking notes, so that critical information about parking spaces is understood regardless of the user's language.
  • Multilingual: The app supports all major European languages, making it accessible to a broad user base.
  • Simplified UI: An optional simplified interface mode reduces visual complexity for users who benefit from a cleaner layout.
  • Extra Large Buttons: An option to increase button sizes for users with reduced motor skills.
  • Reduced Motion: Support for reduced motion preferences, minimizing animations for users sensitive to motion.

Testing and Validation

HandiPark has been thoroughly tested and validated by its target user group. The Norwegian Association of Disabled (Norges Handikapforbund, NHF) tested the app over several months and featured the solution in their member magazine. We maintain a dedicated testing group and a Slack channel for continuous user feedback.

Known Limitations

  • Map Interaction: Map-based interfaces have inherent accessibility challenges. While we provide alternative text-based information for parking spots, full map exploration via screen readers may be limited.
  • Third-party Data: Parking data is sourced from Statens vegvesen. Availability and accuracy of data depend on the external data source.

Technologies Used

HandiPark is built using React Native, which allows us to deliver a consistent, accessible experience across iOS, Android and web platforms. The app uses native accessibility APIs on each platform to ensure optimal integration with assistive technologies.
